Zay Flowers WR Boston College: Scouting Report

Height: 5’9

Weight: 182

Overall

Zay Flowers is a dynamic playmaker in Boston College’s balanced offense. In his 4 collegiate seasons, he played in 48 games, starting 37 of them. He is an explosive athlete and had a lot of production this past season and throughout his career. In the right system he can be an immediate impact player in the NFL.

Pass Game

Flowers has excellent speed off the line of scrimmage and does a very good job of attacking defenders in his routes to get them on their heels and off balanced. He is a polished route runner and ran routes at all 3 levels of the field. He has the ability to create a lot of separation down field both with his speed and quickness in his routes. He has very good hands and made some very difficult catches on film. He is undersized though and may have trouble making contested catches at the next level against bigger, stronger corners. After the catch he is a phenomenal playmaker. He has immediate explosiveness and has the speed to outrun the 2nd level of the defense. He also makes defenders miss with his shiftiness and quick feet allowing him to make big plays in open space.

Run Game

In the run game, Flowers was often used on jet sweeps and quick screens to get the ball in his hands and let him make a play in space. His speed and natural playmaking ability will allow him to be used in the run game at the next level. Even though he is undersized, he shows a lot of effort and physicality as a run blocker as well. This physicality and ability to create holes for the ball-carrier makes him a true 3 down receiver.

Last Word

Flowers has experience playing in both the slot and on the outside but projects best in the slot where he can use the extra space to create separation and make big plays. He projects best in a pass heavy offense with a strong-armed quarterback who can get the ball to him deep down the field and as soon as he creates space in his routes. He will thrive on 3rd downs and he has experience in the return game which adds to his value on special teams.

One-Liner: Zay Flowers is an excellent playmaker after the catch and with his polished route running and hands, he can grow into a number one receiver in a pass heavy option.
