Michael Mayer TE Notre Dame: Scouting Report

Height: 6’5

Weight: 265

Overall

Michael Mayer is a big-bodied tight end in Notre Dame’s pro-style offense. In his 3 seasons with the Fighting Irish, he played in 36 games, starting 27 of them. He is a very good athlete for his size and he had phenomenal production during his college career.

Pass Game

Mayer is a dominant receiver on film. Even with his large size, he runs very good routes and has the speed and quickness to create separation down the field. He has excellent hands and has a very large catch radius. He is very physical at the catch point allowing him to make tough contested catches. After the catch, he has the strength to break tackles and the acceleration to quickly get up field and create big plays with his legs. He is a mismatch when lined up in man and his hands and physicality will make him a huge weapon on 3rd downs and in the red zone.

Run Game

In the run game, Mayer shows very good effort in blocking and has the power to drive his man off the ball and create holes for the ball-carrier. He has the athleticism to make blocks at the 2nd level but at times he will over run his man and lose his leverage. He has a lot of experience run blocking in college and he will be an immediate 3-down player to begin his career.

Last Word

Mayer can line up anywhere on the field but projects best as an on the line of scrimmage tight end who can be spread out in obvious passing situations. He is a hybrid tight end and can be used as both an ‘H’ or ‘Y.’ His elite blend of size, speed, and catching ability will make him a quarterback’s best friend as he can be a trusted receiving option early in his career. He will excel on 3rd downs and in the redzone and his athleticism will allow him to be used on special teams.

One-Liner: Michael Mayer is a sure-handed receiver who can be an immediate mismatch to begin his career and his run blocking experience will allow him to be used on all 3 downs.
