Troy Franklin WR Oregon: Scouting Report

Height: 6’2

Weight: 187

Overall

Troy Franklin is a dynamic “Z” receiver in Oregon’s RPO heavy offense. In his 3 seasons with the Ducks he played in 40 games with 26 starts. He had excellent production during his collegiate career setting multiple program records. He has elite speed and has the playmaking ability to make an immediate impact at the next level.

Pass Game

Franklin is smooth off the line of scrimmage and has the acceleration to create separation early in his routes. He ran a fairly complex route tree this past season and made big plays both on deep balls and short comeback routes. On fades and go routes he shows the elite long speed to take the top off of defenses and does a good job of tracking the ball down the field. On comebacks and hitches he has the quickness to snap off at the top of his routes to create immediate separation from the defender. He has very good route savvy and with further development he can be an elite route-runner in the NFL. He made some difficult catches on film but he has inconsistent hands. He uses his body too often when bringing in the football and had multiple hands drops down the field this past season. His thin frame makes it difficult for him to fight through contact and make contested catches. He shows the athleticism to go up and attack the football on deep balls but on short routes he struggles bringing in the ball through contact. After the catch he continues to show his quickness and speed as he is able to dodge defenders and get up the field in a hurry. He is a dynamic playmaker and although he needs to improve his hands, his ability to create separation all over the field will make him a reliable receiver at the next level.

Run Game

Franklin was rarely used on designed runs but he was often used in the screen game. His speed and playmaking skills make him a threat every time he touches the ball and he had some success on outside screens but he is better utilized down the field as a receiver. As a blocker on the outside Franklin struggles against bigger, physical corners and he was often driven off his spot on film. He may not be a reliable blocker on the edge right now, but he has the size and frame to get stronger and develop further in his career.

Last Word

Franklin projects best as a “Z” receiver in a pass-heavy offense. He lined up on the outside and in the slot in college and has the size, speed, and quickness to make plays anywhere on the field. His inconsistent hands may cause issues but his ability to separate early in his routes will make him a reliable 3rd down receiver. His speed should make him an immediate special teams option as well.

One-Liner: What Troy Franklin lacks in his hands, he makes up for in his ability to create separation down the field with both speed and quickness making him an immediate starter at the next level.
