Kingsley Suamataia OT BYU: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4

Weight: 329

Overall

Kingsley Suamataia is a big left tackle in BYU’s balanced offense. He began his career at Oregon where he appeared in 1 game during his redshirt season in 2021. He then transferred to BYU where over his final 2 seasons he played in and started 23 games. He missed multiple games during his final season due to an ankle injury but he does not look to have any major injuries in his career. He has the size and length to play at the next level but on film he has too many flaws that he needs to fix before he can be a reliable starter.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Suamataia is quick in getting into his pass set but he has inconsistent footwork. He plays with a narrow base causing him to easily get off-balanced and makes it difficult for him to quickly change direction. Against inside moves he lacks the lateral movement to stay square with his man. This lack of mobility makes it difficult for him to pick up inside stunts and blitzes as well. He has good arm length and when he gets good hand placement he is a very good pass protector but if a defender gets past his initial block he lacks the foot speed and balance to recover. He has an inconsistent anchor and shows poor footwork against power rushers causing him to get pushed back often against bull-rushes. He has the size and length to be an effective pass blocker and shows flashes of ability on film but he is far too inconsistent to be relied upon against NFL level pass rushers.

Run Game

In the run game, Suamataia shows very good speed out of his stance but he again struggles to quickly change direction to get square with his man. He has a sufficient initial punch and the size to wall off defenders but lacks the nastiness and block temperament to drive defenders up the field. At times he will put his head down making it easier for defenders to swipe him away. It is difficult for him to make blocks at the 2nd level. He was occasionally used as a pulling lineman and has the speed to get to his spot but struggles to stop his feet to block his man. He has experience both in zone and power run schemes but is better suited in a zone run scheme.

Last Word

Suamataia projects best as a left tackle in a zone-heavy run scheme where he can block immediately out of his stance rather than on the move at the 2nd level. His inconsistent footwork and anchor may force him to move inside but he has the size and length to play tackle in the pros. He is a better pass protector than run blocker but he will need to develop before he can be relied upon on 3rd downs.

One-Liner: Kingsley Suamataia has the size and length to play at the next level but his inconsistent footwork and lack of lateral quickness will make him a backup to begin his career with the potential to develop into a starter.
