Jahmyr Gibbs RB Alabama: Scouting Report

Height: 5’10

Weight: 200

Overall

Jahmyr Gibbs is an explosive running back in Alabama’s balanced offense. He transferred from Georgia Tech after 2 seasons where he played in 19 games, starting all of them. This past season at Alabama he played in 12 games, starting them all as well. He is electrifying runner who is dominant out in space.

Run Game

In the run game, Gibbs shows very good vision in finding the open running lanes and has phenomenal burst to get through the hole and get up the field in a hurry. His balance allows him to make quick cuts without losing any of his speed. When he gets to the 2nd level he quickly gets to the sideline and turns on the jets to outrun the secondary. He is a true home-run hitting runner. While he has sufficient size, he struggles breaking tackles and making plays after contact. He plays with a lot of fight though allowing him to often fall forward to gain extra yards but he plays his best when is out in space and can quickly get up field.

Pass Game

Gibbs was often used as a receiver this past season and made some big plays. He has good hands but had some critical drops against Tennessee. His speed and cutting ability allows him to run very good routes and once the ball is in his hands he continues to use his speed to get up field and create big gains. He was occasionally used as a pass blocker and when he was he showed a lot of struggles. At times he failed to identify his man leaving a free rusher to get the quarterback while other times he was just beat due to his lack of aggression and strength. His inability to currently be used as a pass blocker will limit his value to begin his career.

Last Word

Gibbs showed tremendous success on both zone and gap runs on film but with his speed and success on the edge, he projects best in a zone scheme in the NFL. His ability as a receiver will allow him to play on third downs and be used in the slot but his lack of pass blocking ability could be an issue in certain schemes. He was also used in the kick return game though where he can further show his explosiveness.

One-Liner: Gibbs is an explosive runner who will be an immediate impact player in the NFL, but he will need to improve his pass blocking and consistency as a pass catcher to reach his full potential.
