Devin Lloyd WLB Utah: Scouting Report

Height: 6’2’’

Weight: 235

Overall

Devin Lloyd played as the Mike linebacker in Utah’s hybrid defense, but he projects best as a Will linebacker at the next level. In his 3 college seasons, he played in 47 games, starting 32 of them. He is a converted receiver turned linebacker which shows on film. He is an excellent athlete and has the burst and tackling ability to be a great outside linebacker in the NFL.

Run Game

Lloyd does not have the best instincts and falls for play fakes too often, but when he diagnoses running plays he flies to the football and is an incredible playmaker. He is a very good tackler and with his speed and length he is excellent at chasing down running backs and making plays behind the line of scrimmage. He has the strength to get off blocks and he does a great job of fighting through traffic to get to the football. He has sideline to sideline speed and with his blend of size and closing speed he can be a dominant run and chase linebacker.

Pass Game

While Lloyd played primarily at Mike Linebacker, he was also used as an edge rusher while at Utah. He has the size and strength to be a good pass rusher, but he is best suited to play off the ball. On blitzes, he continues to use his closing speed to get to the quarterback. In coverage, he has the athleticism and ball skills to cover in both man and zone coverage, but he makes far too many mental mistakes before he can fully be trusted against the pass.

Last Word

Lloyd projects best as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense where he can play off the ball as well as blitz off the edge. While he makes too many mistakes resulting in big plays for the offense, he has the athleticism and playmaking skills to grow into a dominant linebacker in the pros. He is versatile enough to play all over the field and can be a dynamic defender who excels on 3rd downs. His athleticism makes him a great special teams player as well.

One-Liner: While Lloyd makes some mental mistakes, he has the size, speed, and playmaking ability to develop into a very strong linebacker in the pros.
