Chad Muma WLB Wyoming: Scouting Report

Height: 6’3’’

Weight: 239

Overall

Chad Muma is a Will linebacker in Wyoming’s 4-3 defense. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 46 games, starting 23 of them. He has an excellent blend of size and speed and had a lot of production during his college career.

Run Game

In the run game, Muma plays with intensity and an excellent motor. He is constantly flying to the football, and he has the speed to chase down plays from sideline to sideline. He is a strong tackler and does a good job of wrapping up the ball carrier. At times, he will commit too early up field resulting in him being out of position and opening up running lanes. If he correctly identifies the play though, he is very good at shedding blocks, sifting through the trash, and making the play. His mental mistakes are a concern but if he can develop his processing abilities and not waste any steps, he can be a very strong run stopper in the NFL.

Pass Game

Muma has experience in both man and zone coverage. In zone coverage, he covers a lot of ground and has very good closing speed on underneath passes. He makes some mental mistakes in zone coverage similar to the run game, but it is something that can be fixed moving forward. In man coverage, he has the speed and technique to cover both running backs and tight ends deep down the field. With his size and strength, he was also used as a stand up edge rusher at times and had some success in getting to the quarterback. His skills in man coverage and in pass rushing will allow him to be an every down player in the NFL.

Last Word

Muma projects best as a 4-3 Will linebacker where he can use his mobility to cover ground against the run, and be used in coverage. If he can continue to develop his instincts and coverage skills, he can excel on 3rd downs. He also has plenty of experience playing special teams and he can be a pro-bowl caliber special teams player at the next level.

One-Liner: Chad Muma has the intensity and athleticism to be a dominant linebacker in the NFL, but if he is unable to improve his instincts and reduce his mental mistakes, he will be forced to be used in a rotational role.
