Will Campbell OT LSU: Scouting Report
Height: 6’6
Weight: 323
Overall
Will Campbell is an experienced starter in LSU's pass-heavy offense. In his 3 seasons with the Tigers, he played in 38 games starting all of them at left tackle. He has very good size and strength but below average arm length and limited athleticism may force him to move inside to guard at the next level.
Pass Game
In pass protection, Campbell has good technique in getting into his pass set but occasionally has heavy feet allowing edge rushers to beat him on inside moves. When he gets his hands on the defender he has the strength to keep them in his grasp and keep them from making any impact on the play. If his hands get on the outside shoulders of his man, he tends to hold them when they try to get outside. He has an inconsistent anchor. On bullrushes he often gets pushed back into the pocket and he struggles getting his feet back into position. He has the size and strength to match-up against NFL level edge rushers but his lack of anchor and lower body fluidity is a big concern going forward.
Run Game
In the run game, Campbell has a strong initial punch off the line of scrimmage but is inconsistent with his block temperament. At times on film he looks physical and drives defenders off the ball while other times he looks slow and stops his feet after contact, allowing his man to fight through and make a play on the ball-carrier. He was rarely used as a pulling blocker on power runs and when he was a puller he showed a lack of athleticism in getting around the line and ahead of the play. This lack of athleticism will limit his versatility if he eventually moves inside to guard.
Last Word
Campbell has the size to play tackle but with his below average arm length and lack of foot quickness, he projects best as a guard in a zone running scheme. Even at guard, he lacks the athleticism to be used as a puller and he will struggle trying to block in space. He is experienced and versatile enough to play in multiple positions along the offensive line but he lacks the physical traits needed to be a dominant lineman.
One-Liner: Campbell can be an immediate starter at tackle or guard, but his lack of athleticism and physical traits limit his ceiling, and he will be a solid starter at best.
