Kelvin Banks Jr. OT Texas: Scouting Report
Height: 6’4
Weight: 320
Overall
Kelvin Banks Jr. is a powerful left tackle in Texas’ pass heavy offense. In his 3 seasons with the Longhorns, he played in 42 games, starting all of them. He played left tackle his entire collegiate career but with his size, strength, and athleticism, he can play all 5 positions along the offensive line if needed. He played against elite edge rushers on film and still played at a very high level. He has the experience and talent to be an immediate starter in the NFL.
Pass Game
In the pass game, Banks has quick feet to get into his pass set. He plays with a wide base and he has the balance and lower body strength to protect against both inside and outside rushes. He has an excellent anchor allowing him to hold his ground against bullrushes. On stunts and blitzes he shows good awareness to block the initial threat then pass him off to the inside and then block the extra rusher. At times he showed some issues protecting against longer, more athletic edge rushers, like Mykel Williams of Georgia, but with his technique and athleticism, he can still match-up well throughout an entire game. On film, Texas ran a lot of screen plays to his side of the field and he did a very good job of using his athleticism to get out and space and get up the field as the lead blocker.
Run Game
In the run game, Banks is dominant and consistently opened up holes for the ball-carrier. He has a very strong initial punch and with his powerful lower body he can drive his man off the line of scrimmage. In gap scheme runs, he has excellent fluidity to flip his hips and wall off interior defensive linemen to create an open lane behind him. He was not used as a pulling tackle often but when he was he showed elite athleticism to get around the line and get to the second level of the defense. He can excel in any run scheme with his blend of power and athleticism.
Last Word
Banks projects best as a left tackle in a balanced offense at the next level. He excelled in both pass protection and run blocking on film and with his experience starting every game in college, he can be an immediate franchise left tackle in the pros. With his versatility, he can move to the right side or the interior if needed as well.
One-Liner: Kelvin Banks Jr. has an elite blend of strength, physicality, and athleticism to be an elite left tackle in the NFL and he has the versatility to play any of the 5 positions along the offensive line if needed.
