Overall

Darnell Wright is a powerful offensive tackle in Tennessee’s pass heavy offense. In his 4 collegiate seasons, he played in 47 games, starting 42 of them. He has experience playing all over the line with double digit starts at right tackle and left tackle as well as starting at guard during his freshman season. He is a good athlete for his size and is dominant on film.

Pass Game

Wright has excellent footwork in getting to his pass sets and plays with a wide base. He has an elite anchor and rarely gives up ground against bullrushes. He plays with very good balance and once he gets his hands on edge rushers he is dominant in refusing to let them get around him and to the quarterback. He played at right tackle on film but he has the ability to pass protect against the best edge rushers as a left tackle as well. His elite size and strength will allow him to matchup against anyone in the NFL and with his vast playing experience in college he should have an easy transition at the next level.

Run Game

Wright played in a pass heavy offense but when they ran the ball he continued to show his elite strength by driving his man off the ball and consistently opening up running lanes. He has a powerful lower body and consistently drives his feet after initial contact. He has good athleticism for his size and made some key blocks at the 2nd level on film but he was rarely used as a pulling tackle on film. At times, he will play too top heavy when run blocking which allows defenders to swipe him away and make plays on the ball-carrier but that can be fixed in the pros.

Last Word

Darnell Wright can play all over the line of scrimmage but projects best as a right tackle with the versatility to play left tackle if needed. With his dominance as a pass protector, he also projects best in a pass-heavy offense where he can use his elite anchor and strength to keep the pocket clean. He will be an immediate impact player and has the physical tools to grow into a franchise tackle.
