DeMarvin Leal is a versatile defensive lineman in Texas A&M’s 4-3 hybrid defense. He lined up on the edge as a 5-technique as well as on the interior as both a 3-technique and nose tackle. In his 3 college seasons, he played in 35 games, starting 29 of them. He started 7 games as a true freshman and had a lot of production throughout his career at Texas A&M even playing against top competition.

Run Game

In the run game, Leal has the size and power to fill open gaps and the lateral movement ability to make tackles at the line of scrimmage. Once he gets his hands on the ball-carrier, he is a very sure tackler. With his versatility to line up all over the line, he will provide excellent value to be moved around against different formations. At times, he struggles to get off blocks which leads to big runs, but he has the physical tools to be a very strong run defender in the NFL.

Pass Game

As a pass rusher, Leal lacks the speed and explosiveness to rush off the edge. As an interior rusher, he has good power to collapse the pocket and shows a good motor in continuing to fight through blocks and get to the quarterback. He made some very good plays on tape and showed the pass rush repertoire to get around offensive linemen, but his lack of explosiveness and athleticism will limit his production as a pass rusher at the next level. He will make the occasional big play but often he will likely be the clean up guy in pass rushing situations.

Last Word

Leal projects best as a 3-technique in a 4-3 scheme. While he has plenty of experience playing on the edge as a 5-technique, I believe his power will allow him to have more of an impact on the interior. He is versatile enough to play all over the line though which makes him a very valuable player to any defense. He can make plays against the pass, but his lack of explosiveness will require him to play on early downs more often and limit his usage on 3rd down passing situations. He can be a strong special teams player though.

One-Liner: DeMarvin Leal has excellent versatility to be used all over the defensive line, but his lack of explosiveness will likely require him to play on the interior as an early down defender.
