Trent McDuffie CB Washington: Scouting Report

Height: 5’11’’

Weight: 193

Overall

Trent McDuffie is an outside corner for Washington’s zone heavy defense. In his 3 college seasons, he played in 29 games, starting 26 of them. He is a very athletic corner and shows good technique on film.

Pass Game

McDuffie played a lot of zone coverage but when he played in man he showed very good footwork and technique off the line of scrimmage to mirror his man down the field. He makes very good breaks on the ball and has excellent closing speed. On film, the ball was very rarely thrown his way and he did not have a lot of production in his career, so it is tough to judge his ball skills. In zone, he covers a lot of ground with his speed and his range allows him to play as a safety if needed.

Run Game

In the run game, McDuffie showed very little aggression and poor effort to get off blocks. He often avoided the ball-carrier at every chance he got, and his lack of physicality will be a problem in the NFL. He has the speed to chase down the ball-carrier, but he does not drive to the football. If he does not improve, he will be a liability in run support.

Last Word

McDuffie played on the outside while at Washington, but his technique, athleticism, and range allow him to be used on the boundary, in the slot, or as a safety if needed. Even though he is versatile, he projects best as a number 2 outside corner to begin his career who can play in the slot as well. His coverage ability makes him a very good 3rd down player, and he has experience as a returner in special teams which adds to his value.

One-Liner: Trent McDuffie has very good footwork and technique but he needs to improve his run support before he can be a number 1 cornerback.
