Overall

Roger McCreary is an outside corner in Auburn’s man heavy defense. He lined up primarily on the boundary but can matchup with receivers in the slot and still have a lot of success. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 42 games, starting 23 of them. He played against some of the best competition while in college and on film, showed the abilities to be an immediate starter in the NFL.

Pass Game

McCreary has excellent footwork and technique in both man and zone coverage. In man coverage, he has fluid hips to easily change direction down the field, and the closing speed and burst to make plays on the ball. He played against some of the nation’s top receivers during his college career and showed that he can match-up with them one on one. In zone coverage, he stays balanced in his back pedal and continues to use his athleticism to make quick breaks on the ball and closes out the space on short passes. He is a sufficient tackler, but he struggles making tackles in the open field. He has the aggression to make tough tackles, he just needs to work on his footwork and technique when getting to the ball-carrier.

Run Game

In the run game, McCreary again shows good aggression in getting to the ball-carrier, he just needs to improve his ability to make plays in open space. He is a bit undersized for an outside corner, but he will not be a liability against the run at the next level.

Last Word

McCreary projects best as a number 2 outside corner who is versatile enough to play in the slot as well as has the potential to grow into a number 1. He showed very good coverage skills on tape and with the level of competition he played in, he should not have a tough transition into the pros. He can excel as a man cover corner on 3rd downs and his athleticism will allow him to be used on special team as well.

One-Liner: McCreary is not dominant against the run, but his coverage skills and versatility to play on both the inside and outside will make him a very valuable piece to any pass defense in the NFL.
