Kyler Gordon CB Washington: Scouting Report
Height: 6’0’’
Weight: 198
Overall
Kyler Gordon is an athletic outside corner in Washington’s zone heavy defense. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 33 games, starting 17 of them. Although he does not have a lot of experience he showed very good technique on film and made some big plays in coverage.
Pass Game
In the pass game, Gordon has the technique and athleticism to play on both the outside and inside. He has quick feet and excellent mirror ability at the line of scrimmage allowing him to limit separation down the field. He has some false steps at the line of scrimmage, but his athleticism makes up for it and he can improve his footwork in the NFL. He has excellent speed to cover deep and recover if he needs to. He covers a lot of ground in zone coverage and has excellent closing speed in getting to the receiver. When the ball is in the air he does a good job of getting his around and breaking up the pass. At the catch point, he needs to be more physical against bigger receivers to decrease space for them to work with. Overall, he has the athleticism, technique, and ball skills to be a very good cover corner at the next level.
Run Game
In the run game, Gordon shows good technique in the open field allowing him to make the play, but he lacks the physicality and intensity to make an impact in run support. He struggles getting off blocks which is a concern against outside runs. He has the size and tackling ability to be a sufficient run defender, but he needs to be more physical to become a more well-rounded corner.
Last Word
Kyler Gordon has the size, technique, and speed to be a very strong outside corner in the NFL. He projects best as number 2 outside corner to begin his career with the potential to grow into a number 1. He has all the tools to make an immediate impact and if he can continue to develop as a run defender he can make plays all over the field. His athleticism will allow him to make an immediate impact on special teams as well.
One-Liner: Kyler Gordon has the coverage skills and athleticism to be a very good corner in the NFL and with further development he can be a long-term starter at a critical position.
