Tyler Smith OG Tulsa: Scouting Report
Height: 6’5’’
Weight: 324
Overall
Tyler Smith is the athletic left tackle in Tulsa’s balanced offense. In his 3 college seasons, he has played in 26 games, starting 24 of them. He is a very athletic lineman and shows the toughness to play against physical defensive linemen at the next level.
Pass Game
In pass protection, Smith has very quick feet off the line and stays square with his man. He has a good initial punch and when he gets his hands on his man and squares up he is a dominant pass protector, but he has some issues that need to be cleaned up. At times, he shows a poor anchor which will be an issue against powerful edge rushers in the NFL. Also, when he gets beat on the edge his technique gets sloppy and he holds his man far too often. His lack of arm length makes it difficult for him to keep edge rushers at a distance and allows them to get to his chest and get him off balanced.
Run Game
In the run game, Smith does an excellent job of using his athleticism and strength to move both laterally and vertically while driving his man. He consistently drives his feet, and he can flip his hips to open up running lanes. His athleticism also allows him to get to the 2nd level where he can help create big plays in the ground game.
Last Word
While Smith played left tackle in college, his lack of arm length and holding problems project him best as a guard to begin his career with the upside to move back to tackle. He can be a dominant run blocker in a zone scheme where he can use his athleticism to open up holes. He has a ton of potential and can grow into a very strong NFL lineman.
One-Liner: Tyler Smith can be an immediate starter at guard with his strength and athleticism with the physical upside to grow into a starting tackle later in his career.
