Jalen Wydermyer TE Texas A&M: Scouting Report
Height: 6’4’’
Weight: 255
Overall
Jalen Wydermyer is an athletic tight end in Texas A&M’s run heavy offense. In his 3 college seasons, he played in 35 games, starting 33 of them. He has a great blend of size and athleticism to play at the next level and he played with very good toughness, especially when blocking.
Pass Game
Wydermyer lined up all over the field in Texas A&M’s offense, primarily on the line of scrimmage and in the slot. He has good speed off the line of scrimmage, but he does not run very complex routes. He creates separation through his size and speed though which makes him a difficult matchup for defenders. He made some good catches on film and showed the ability to high point the ball down the field but he had some very bad drops that he needs to clean up. Wydermyer excels after the catch. He has very good speed for his size to get up the field and he has the strength to break tackles and carry defenders after contact.
Run Game
As a run blocker, Wydermyer showed very good strength and technique on film and played well against some top edge rushers this past season. He showed very good effort and at times opened up big running lanes for the back. His blocking ability will allow him to be used on all downs and he can be used as a blocker out in space and as a pulling blocker when he is lined up in the wing.
Last Word
Wydermyer projects best as an H tight end in the NFL with his size, athleticism, and receiving ability but he also has the blocking skills to be used on all 3 downs in multiple schemes. If he can continue to improve his hands, he can be a very reliable receiver on 3rd downs. His blocking will allow him to be used on special teams as well.
One-Liner: Wydermyer has the size, athleticism, and run after the catch ability to be a dominant weapon at the next level with the versatility to be used in the run game as well.
