Jahan Dotson WR Penn State: Scouting Report

Height: 5’11’’

Weight: 184

Overall

Jahan Dotson played on both the outside and in the slot in Penn State’s pass heavy offense. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 42 games, starting 38 of them. He is a dynamic athlete and was extremely productive this past season. He also made some big catches against tough opponents on film and was a reliable receiver for the Penn State offense.

Pass Game

Dotson has excellent speed and footwork off the line and creates a lot of separation on his slants and hitch routes. On his intermediate routes he does a great job of sticking his foot in the ground and quickly changing direction leading to big plays. He has very good hands and has the ability to high point the football and adjust his body to make tough catches in the middle of the field. He makes body catches occasionally on film which is concerning but his hands should not be an issue in the league. He is a run after catch receiver and did not make many contested catches on film, but he is a natural playmaker with the ball in his hands. He also has the speed and acceleration to outrun the defense and create home-run hitting plays.

Run Game

Dotson was occasionally used on jet sweeps and wildcat runs, and he has the speed to get to the edge and make plays in the run game. He did not have many clips of him blocking on film but with his lack of strength I expect him to struggle as a blocker in the NFL.

Last Word

Dotson played all over the field while at Penn State, but he projects best as a slot receiver in the NFL with the versatility to play outside when needed. He has excellent quickness and footwork off the line, and he is a natural playmaker with the ball in his hands. His route running and hands make him a very reliable receiver and he can excel on 3rd downs. He was also Penn State’s punt returner where he was able to use his athleticism and playmaking ability to create big plays on special teams.

One-Liner: Dotson is an excellent playmaker who can be used all over the field, but he lacks the size and contested catch ability to be a number one outside receiver in the NFL.
