Carson Strong QB Nevada: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4’’

Weight: 226

Overall

Carson Strong is a big, pocket passer in Nevada’s Air Raid offense. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 32 games, starting 31 of them. He is a prototypical pocket passer and has very limited ability in getting outside the pocket. He is a good leader and shows toughness when under pressure.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Strong showed very good footwork and balance in the pocket. He consistently read the defense, went through his progressions and dumped the ball off to his outlet receiver when needed. He did have a big advantage playing behind a strong offensive line though so it may difficult for him to be successful if he is forced to move around more and make more quick decisions. Although he is not a mobile quarterback, he does make accurate throws when he is out of the pocket. He has very good arm strength but his velocity on his throws could be better at times. He is a very accurate quarterback especially deep down the field and can make all the throws needed at the next level. He is consistent on film and does everything you want from a traditional pocket passer but he does not have the upside compared to other more athletic, and naturally gifted quarterbacks in this class.

Run Game

In the run game, Strong is basically nonexistent. He is not a mobile quarterback and very rarely made plays with his legs on film. His size does allow him to be used on short yardage plays, but he plays his best when he can sit back in the pocket, go through his reads, and make the accurate throw. His lack of athleticism vastly limits of potential and usage in the NFL.

Last Word

Strong projects best in a balanced offense where he does not need to leave the pocket and he can focus on his downfield accuracy. He is a smart, technical player who rarely makes mistakes. He is very consistent on film and has arguably the best deep ball in this year’s class of quarterbacks. He is a high floor player who should transition well into the NFL but his lack of athleticism and throw velocity limits his ceiling and limits his chances of being a very good starting quarterback.

One Liner: Strong is the definition of an accurate pocket passer who can make every throw in the book, but his limited athleticism hurts his potential at the next level.
