Aidan Hutchinson Edge Michigan: Scouting Report

Overall

Aidan Hutchinson is a strong, agile pass rusher in Michigan’s 4-3 Hybrid defense. He was used primarily on the edge but has some experience on the interior. In his 4 college seasons he played in 42 games, starting 29 of them. He has very good athleticism and uses his strength, agility, and technique to be an immediate impact player at the next level.

Pass Game

Hutchinson has an extremely quick first step and does a very good job of timing the snap to get a fast start to the play. He primarily lined up in a 2-point standing up stance but would occasionally line up in a 4-point stance.  When rushing the passer, he was able to get to the quarterback in a variety of ways. He has the strength to bull rush, the hand technique for swim moves, and the athleticism for spin moves and speed rushes. His best ability however is his constant motor. He never stops his feet and is always giving his full effort to get to the passer even when double or even triple teamed. He had tremendous sack production while at Michigan and plays his best when he can pin his ears back on solely focus on getting to the quarterback. He does not have a lot of experience playing in coverage and should not be used in coverage in the NFL due to his value as a pass rusher.

Run Game

As a run defender he has the strength to set the edge but needs to improve his ability to fill the inside gaps rather than getting washed out of the play. He is a good tackler when he gets to the running back and still uses a high motor when chasing down plays.

Last Word

Hutchinson projects best as a 7-technique edge rusher in a 4-3 scheme. He plays his best when on the edge and will be a dominant pass rusher in the NFL. He will thrive on 3rd downs where he can focus on getting to the quarterback and use his excellent technique in getting around his man. He also has experience playing on special teams where he blocked a field goal on film.

One-Liner: Aidan Hutchinson is a dominant pass rusher and with his size, technique, and incredible motor he can be an immediate impact player in the NFL and can be a franchise changing edge rusher.
