Myles Murphy EDGE Clemson: Scouting Report

Height: 6’3

Weight: 305

Overall

Myles Murphy is an explosive edge rusher in Clemson’s 4-3 defense. In his 3 collegiate seasons, he has played in 38 games, starting 27 of them. He has very good size and strength and he will make an immediate impact as a pass rusher to begin his career.

Pass Game

Murphy has an elite first step and has the explosiveness to quickly get to the outside hip of his man or get his hands on when bullrushing. He has a very good initial punch and the motor to drive his man and collapse the pocket. When he is not bullrushing he shows a strong pass rush repertoire. He has very good hand technique and can get around offensive linemen using a multitude of pass rush moves. On film he showed a swim move, push/pull, long arm stab, and of course his bullrush. Around the edge he has very good bend and balance for his size to get around his man and move laterally to the quarterback. He excels on stunt rushes with his short area quickness to move around the line and accelerate through line of scrimmage to make the play. While he is explosive, he lacks the long speed when chasing down quarterbacks outside the pocket. He shows very good effort in his pursuit though.

Run Game

In the run game, Murphy continues to show off his strength to hold the line of scrimmage and get off blocks to make the tackle when the ball-carrier gets near him. Against option plays in the pocket he has the explosiveness to blow them up in the backfield but when they are to the outside in space, he struggles to keep up with his assignment and will get stuck in no man’s land.

Last Word

Myles Murphy played primarily in a 5-technique off the edge but is versatile enough to be rotated around the line. He projects best in a 4-3 defense where he can get around the edge against the pass and hold the edge against the run. His experience as a pass-rusher will allow him to excel on 3rd downs early in his career and he can be used on special teams if needed.

One-Liner: Myles Murphy is a polished pass-rusher with a unique blend of size, strength, and explosiveness to attack the edge and be used in a myriad of ways for a defense.
