Devon Achane RB Texas A&M: Scouting Report
Height: 5’9
Weight: 185
Overall
Devon Achane is an explosive running back in Texas A&M’s balanced offense. In his 3 seasons with the Aggies, he played in 30 games starting 10 of them. He also ran track and field for Texas A&M and that speed is obvious on the football field.
Run Game
Achane has very good vision once the ball is in his hands and he is patient in finding the open running lanes. He has excellent acceleration and burst through the line of scrimmage and once he gets to the second level he shows off his track speed to outrun the defense. He has very good footwork and makes excellent cuts to get around defenders. He struggles breaking out of tackles behind the line of scrimmage but once he gets a full head of steam, he has the balance to bounce off defenders and create big plays. His elite burst makes him a true threat every time he touches the ball.
Pass Game
In the pass game, Achane was used on a lot of short outlet routes. He has sufficient hands and shows flashes of being able to make difficult catches down the field but he also had some bad drops on film. After the catch, he continues to show his burst and playmaking ability by finding the open space and quickly getting up field. Even with his lack of size, he made some very good blocks in pass protection and that experience will allow him to be used on 3rd downs early in his NFL career.
Last Word
While at Texas A&M, Achane was used on both zone and gap runs but he projects best in a zone heavy run scheme where he can use his speed and vision to get to the outside and create big plays. His experience as a pass catcher and pass blocker will allow him to excel on 3rd downs and he can be a true 3-down runner. He was also used as a kick returner in college and made some big plays on special teams which adds to his value in the pros.
One-Liner: Although Devon Achane is undersized, he has unreal speed and acceleration making him a dangerous weapon on the ground and through the air.
