Luke Musgrave TE Oregon State: Scouting Report

Height: 6’6

Weight: 255

Overall

Luke Musgrave is a tall, receiving tight end in Oregon State’s balanced offense. In his 4 seasons with the Beavers, he played in 34 games, starting 15 of them. He suffered a season ending knee injury just two games into this past season but he showed that he was fully recovered at the Senior Bowl so that should not affect the beginning of career. He is a tremendous athlete for his size but his limited college production as a receiver is concerning.

Pass Game

Musgrave is very fast off the line of scrimmage and uses his long strides to quickly gain speed on deep routes. He is very fast out of his breaks but struggles creating separation against bigger, more physical defenders. He has very good hands and can make difficult catches down the field using his athleticism but he has some inconsistencies in making physical, contested catches. After the catch he has the speed to quickly get up field but he lacks the strength and balance to break out of tackles or create yards after contact. He is a true receiving threat and can be used like a big wide  receiver at the next level.

Run Game

In the run game, Musgrave shows very good effort and temperament in his run blocking and made some key blocks on film. While he showed some success as a run blocker on film, his lack of body mass will create some problems against NFL sized edge rushers and outside linebackers. With his athleticism he can quickly get to the 2nd level and does a good job of blocking defensive backs but he will need to add some weight before he can used as a run blocker from the line of scrimmage rather than split out wide.

Last Word

Musgrave projects best in a pass heavy offense where he can be used as an H tight end, lined up primarily in the slot or on the boundary. His lack of mass will limit his ability as a run blocker but his skills as a pass catcher will keep him on the field on passing downs. He will need to be used as an H tight end only until he can add some weight and improve as a run blocker.

One-Liner: Luke Musgrave has the length, speed, and route running skills to be a good receiving tight end in the NFL but his lack of power as a run blocker will limit his ability to be used on all 3 downs.
