Chop Robinson EDGE Penn State: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4

Weight: 254

Overall

Chop Robinson is a dominant edge rusher in Penn State’s 4-3 hybrid defense. He began his career at the University of Maryland for 1 season where he appeared in 13 games, making 1 start as a true freshman. He then transferred to Penn State where he played in 19 games with 7 starts over these past 2 seasons. While he did not have a lot of production on the stat sheet in college he consistently makes plays on film and is a disruptor off the edge against both the run and pass.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Robinson has an elite first step and has excellent speed to beat tackles on the outside along with the balance to dip under blocks and get flat to the quarterback. On inside moves he again shows the quickness and burst to dodge blockers and accelerate into the backfield. He plays with a very high motor and on bullrushes he does a good job of driving his feet after initial contact to collapse the pocket. He has good strength and with his length and hand usage he can create separation and disengage from blocks. He was used all over the line of scrimmage on film and with his explosiveness, he can get to the quarterback from the edge, on the interior, and even as a stand up rusher. He occasionally dropped back into coverage and he showed the speed and vision to make plays in his zone but he is best utilized on the line of scrimmage as a pass rusher.

Run Game

In the run game, Robinson has the strength to set the edge as well as the motor to drive his man into the backfield forcing the ball-carrier to cut back to the inside. When he uses his speed he makes a lot of big plays on the outside but at times he plays too fast causing him to overrun the mesh and leave an open gap on the edge. On runs to the opposite side of the field he shows very good effort in chasing down the ball-carrier and he is a consistent tackler when he gets his hands the back.

Last Word

Robinson has the flexibility to play in both a 4-3 or 3-4 on the outside but he projects best as a 4-3 edge rusher where he can best utilize his speed and elite first step to get into the backfield. He is an excellent pass rusher and his explosiveness will allow him to dominate on 3rd downs. His speed makes him an option on special teams as well especially on field goal block units.

One-Liner: Chop Robinson is an elite athlete and his explosiveness will allow him to excel as a pass rusher in the NFL but his lack of playing experience may result in some obstacles early in his career.
