Adonai Mitchell WR Texas: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4

Weight: 196

Overall

Adonai Mitchell is a tall outside receiver in Texas’ balanced offense. He began his college career at the University of Georgia where over 2 seasons he played in 21 games with 15 starts. He missed the majority of the 2022 season due to a high ankle sprain but showed no lingering issues once he returned. After the 2022 season he then transferred to Texas where he had his most productive year yet playing in 14 games and starting all of them. He is a true “X” receiver who can make big plays down the field, and he can be a reliable target early into his professional career.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Mitchell has good speed off the line of scrimmage and does a good job of quickly getting the defenders on their heels on vertical routes. He shows good route savviness at the top of his routes creating initial separation with both inside and outside moves, but he lacks explosiveness out of his breaks allowing defenders to close the gap early if the ball is not timed perfectly for him. He has good hands and made some very difficult hands catches on film but he uses his body too often which led to some bad drops this past season. With his large size, he is good at boxing out defenders on 50/50 balls down the field but he needs to be more consistent in attacking the ball at its highest point rather than letting it drop into his body. He has a very large catch radius but he has some issues maneuvering his body to adjust to underthrown balls or balls behind him. After the catch he has sufficient speed and vision to gain extra yards but he again lacks the explosiveness to make big plays with his legs. He has the physicality to break arm tackles which helps him on slants and quick outs to break the initial contact but he makes his biggest plays on deep receptions rather than as a catch and run receiver.

Run Game

In the run game, Mitchell was occasionally used on jet sweeps but did not have a lot of success due to his lack of elusiveness in open space, but he can gain a good 5-7 yards on quick screens just from initial speed up field and length. As a run blocker he shows good physicality and with his size he can develop into a very reliable blocker on the outside.

Last Word

Mitchell projects best as an “X” receiver on the outside who can occasionally line up in the slot if needed. With his size and ability to create initial separation at the top of his routes he can be a dominant redzone player and he can consistently move the chains on 3rd downs. His lack of explosiveness though will likely not result in any usage on special teams.

One-Liner: Adonai Mitchell is a tall outside receiver who can make big catches down the field but his lack of explosiveness after the catch and on his long developing routes will likely make him a number 2 receiver throughout his career.
