Amarius Mims OT Georgia: Scouting Report

Height: 6’6

Weight: 340

Overall

Amarius Mims is a massive right tackle in Georgia’s balanced, quick passing offense. In his 3 seasons with the Bulldogs he played in 29 games, starting 8 of them. He missed multiple games this past season due to a high ankle sprain which resulted in tightrope surgery. He then returned to action near the end of the season but did not look like he was back to 100% on film. His lack of experience and injury history is a concern but he has the size and strength to play at the next level.

Pass Game

In pass protection, Mims is quick in getting into his pass set and he plays with a wide base. Once he gets hands on his man, he stays square and has the length to match-up against any edge defender. He has a good anchor but in his limited snaps against Alabama this past season, he got driven back multiple times against bullrushes. In his other games though he rarely gave up any ground and showed the power to defend against bigger, stronger edge defenders. Against speed rushers he has the length to get wide and cover ground on the outside. At times he plays too top heavy allowing quicker defenders to swipe him to the side and get him off-balanced. At Georgia, he played in a quick-passing offense which resulted in him not having a lot of long-developing reps on film. He was not forced to pass protect one on one for long periods of time which he will need to do at a very high level if he wants to be successful at the next level.

Run Game

In the run game, he has a strong initial punch and he has the power to drive both edge rushers and interior linemen off the ball to create open running lanes. After initial contact though he rarely drives his feet and he lacks the nastiness and block temperament to dominate his man. After his first block, he shows poor effort in finding extra work. He rarely gets to the second level and he struggles making blocks in space. He played primarily in a zone-run offense and he has the ability to make the initial block but he needs to be more physical as the play progresses. On power runs, he was often used as a down blocker rather than a pulling lineman. He shows flashes of getting down the field as a pull player but he again struggles making blocks in space.

Last Word

Mims projects best as a right tackle in zone-run scheme where he can use his size and power to open up initial running lanes. He played primarily at right tackle and he does not show the athleticism to move to the left side or be used at guard which diminishes his total value. His lack of nastiness and effort to find extra work is a big concern moving forward. That along with his lack of experience and injury history makes him a true project at the next level. His lack of effort will be a concern for his usage on special teams as well.

One-Liner: Amarius Mims has the size, length, and power to be a dominant tackle in the NFL but his lack of experience and nastiness in his game is a big concern to begin his career.
