Tetairoa McMillan WR Arizona: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4

Weight: 212

Overall

Tetairoa McMillan is a long, dynamic receiver in Arizona’s pass-heavy offense. In his 3 seasons with the Wildcats he played in 37 games, starting 33 of them. He had elite production over these last 2 seasons and he has the physical tools to develop into a dominant receiver at the next level.

Pass Game

McMillan lined up both on the outside and in the slot for Arizona. He does not have excellent acceleration and burst off the line of scrimmage, rather he uses his long strides to get up to top speed down the field. Against press coverage, he showed good technique with his hands to get around corner stabs and create initial separation but he may struggle against bigger, more physical corners in the NFL. He did not run a very complex route tree in college and he was often used on deep routes or quick hitches over the middle to get the ball in his hands. He is very rounded at the top of in-breaking routes allowing defenders to stay in his hip pocket. He uses his size and speed to create separation rather than route running technique. When the play breaks down, he does a good job of finding the soft spot in zone coverage and consistently gets open for the quarterback. He has very good hands and made some elite catches on film. On intermediate routes he is very good at coming back and attacking the football rather than waiting for it to get to him. On deep balls, he is very good at tracking the football and he can go up and high point it if he needs to. After the catch is elusive even with his size and he can make defenders miss in space. Once he gets an open lane he uses his long strides to accelerate past the secondary allowing him the opportunity to hit home-run hitting plays every time he touches the ball.

Run Game

McMillan was rarely used as a designated runner but he has the speed to make plays on jet sweeps or end-arounds. As a blocker, he does a good job of using his size to stay in front of defenders and wall them off away from the play but he does not show a lot of physicality and aggression in his blocks. With his size he needs to make more of an impact blocking on the outside to help create open lanes in the run game.

Last Word

McMillan’s versatility playing both on the outside and in the slot, will allow him to make an impact in a multitude of schemes. He projects best as a number 1 outside receiver who can take the top off of defenses and command attention from the safeties, opening up space for the offense. His inability to consistently create separation in his routes is concerning but he has the size, speed, and catching ability to develop into a true number 1 receiver. He is a reliable, quarterback friendly player who can excel on 3rd downs and be a consistent chain mover.

One-Liner: Tetairoa McMillan has elite physical traits and collegiate production but his lack of route-running prowess and inability to create consistent separation may create some struggles early in his career.
