Quenton Johnston WR TCU: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4

Weight: 215

Overall

Quenton Johnston is a big-bodied playmaker in TCU’s balanced offense. In his 3 seasons at TCU, he played in 30 games, starting 24 of them. He played primarily on the outside but has experience playing in the slot. He has a remarkable blend of size, speed, and quickness to make big plays all over the field.

Pass Game

Even with his large size and frame, Johnston has very quick feet off the line of scrimmage to create separation early in his routes. He has very good speed and change of direction allowing him to excel on go routes and create separation on long developing crossing routes. On hitches and comebacks he can stop on a dime and he shows a lot of route savvy for a player of his size. He has good hands but he needs to be better at using his length to go up and get the ball rather than letting it come to his body. He is a physical player but needs to show more physicality at the catch point to win contested catches. After the catch he is an excellent playmaker. He has the balance to quickly change direction after the catch and he has home-run hitting speed to outrun the defense. He can also break tackles and drag defenders at the end of plays with his strength and leg drive.

Run Game

Johnston was often used on sweeps and screens to get the ball in his hands. He is a dynamic playmaker and can be a strong weapon on designed runs in the NFL. He also has the strength and effort to excel as a blocker on the outside. On film, he made some crucial blocks on wide receiver screens to his side of the field.

Last Word

Johnston can play on the outside or in the slot which adds to his versatility but with his size and speed, he projects best as an outside “X” receiver. His playmaking ability makes him an excellent 3rd down option and he can be a reliable chain-mover early in his career.

One-Liner: Quenton Johnston is a remarkable playmaker for someone of his size and if he improves his physicality at the catch point, he can be a very good number 1 receiver in the NFL.
