Isaiah Spiller RB Texas A&M: Scouting Report

Height: 6’0’’

Weight: 215

Overall

Isaiah Spiller is a balanced running back in Texas A&M’s run heavy offense. In his 3 college seasons, he played in 35 games, starting 29 of them. He is a good athlete and runs with a lot of toughness. He played against pro level talent this past season and was still very successful.

Run Game

Spiller is a very patient runner who uses his shiftiness and toughness to gain yards. After the handoff, he does an excellent job of reading the defense, following his blockers, and finding the open running lane. He has good burst through the line of scrimmage and has the size and strength to break arm tackles and get to the second level. He has very good balance and does a good job of staying on his feet after contact. He consistently fights for extra yards and drives his legs forward at the end of plays. On film, he does not consistently show good long speed, but he has enough juice to break off big runs when he gets into open space. He does a good job of making defenders miss with his ability to shift is weight and make great cuts. His biggest weakness, however, is his ability to hang on to the football. Multiple times on film, Spiller had the ball ripped away from him at the end of plays. While these did not result in turnovers, it is still something that needs to be fixed moving forward.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Spiller was often used as a checkdown receiver. He was also used on swing routes, angle routes, and wheel routes where he showed good route running ability. He had a few drops on film, but his hands are good enough to make the routine plays and the occasional catch in traffic. Once the ball is in his hands, he uses his agility and vision to routinely make the first defender miss and get up field. As a pass protector, he has experience chipping edge defenders as well as picking up blitzing defenders. He was used on a lot of pass plays while in college, and he has the abilities to be used in the passing game at the next level as well.

Last Word

Spiller projects best in an offense where he can be the lead back and get a majority of the carries while also being used as a receiving threat. He has the blocking experience and receiving skills to be used on 3rd downs, making him an every down back. He is not a very flashy player on film, but he can really do it all when it comes to reading his blockers, getting to the 2nd level, and fighting for extra yards after contact.

One-Liner: Spiller can do it all in both the rushing and passing game and should be a very solid starter early on in his career.
