Channing Tindall MLB Georgia: Scouting Report

Height: 6’2’’

Weight: 228

Overall

Channing Tindall is an extremely athletic middle linebacker in Georgia’s dominant 4-3 defense. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 50 games, starting 15 of them. He was used on a rotation due to Georgia’s depth at the linebacker position but when he was on the field, he made a lot of big plays. He is a phenomenal athlete and played his best football against top competition.

Run Game

In the run game, Tindall uses his elite closing speed to fly to the football and makes plays all over the field. Once he diagnoses the play, he hits his 2nd gear and explodes to the football. He is a strong tackler and has very good tackling technique. He runs with a high pad level, and he does not have good change of direction ability which is an issue in his play. At times, he will overrun play action fakes causing him to get out of position leading to big plays. With improved coaching and better awareness, he can be a dominant run defender in the middle of the field.

Pass Game

Tindall was used in a variety of roles against the pass. As a blitzer he has very good strength to get off blocks and continues to show his dominant closing speed in getting to the quarterback. In coverage he has the athleticism and size to match-up against tight ends in man coverage and he has the speed to cover a lot of ground in zone coverage. While he has the physical tools to play well in coverage, he does not have a lot of experience in the secondary. When he plays in zone, he still makes too many mental mistakes leading to open receivers.

Last Word

Tindall projects best as a middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense where he can stuff the run and use his speed to make plays all over the field. His lack of experience in coverage will limit his usage on 3rd down but he can still be used to rush the passer until he develops more as a coverage linebacker. His excellent blend of size and speed though will make him an incredible special teams player.

One-Liner: Channing Tindall has the physical tools and elite closing speed to be a phenomenal linebacker, but he needs to reduce his mental mistakes before he can reach that ceiling.
