Zion Johnson OG Boston College: Scouting Report

Height: 6’3’’

Weight: 312

Overall

Zion Johnson is the left guard in Boston College’s balanced offense. He is a JUCO product who played his first 3 seasons at Davidson playing in 22 games, starting 19 of them before transferring to Boston College. In his 3 seasons at Boston College, he played in 36 games, starting 30 of them. He played both left tackle and guard in college and showed the skills to play either position in college, but with his size, he is better suited to play on the interior.

Pass Game

In pass protection, Johnson has quick feet and uses a wide base to absorb strong initial contact from defenders. He has a very good anchor, and he can hold his own in 1 on 1 blocking plays. After his initial block he has the athleticism to pick up moving linemen and stunts. While he is undersized for a left tackle, on film he showed the footwork and athleticism to pass protect on the edge against strong edge rushers. On the inside, he has the strength to protect against defensive tackles making him a very versatile pass protector moving forward.

Run Game

In the run game, he has an excellent initial punch, and he can drive his man while flipping his hips to create big running lanes. He consistently drives his feet, and he has the power to block against big defensive tackles. His athleticism allows him to get up the field to make blocks in the 2nd level as well. His power and athleticism give him the versatility to run block in both zone and gap schemes.

Last Word

Due to Johnson’s lack of size, he projects best as a guard in the pros. He has plenty of college experience and he has the technique and athleticism to be an immediate starter. He has the versatility to play in any scheme and he can play at tackle if needed.

One-Liner: Zion Johnson has the footwork, strength, and athleticism to be an immediate starter at the next level and he has the versatility to both on the inside and at tackle.
