David Ojabo EDGE Michigan: Scouting Report
Height: 6’4’’
Weight: 252
Overall
David Ojabo is an athletic edge rusher in Michigan’s 4-3 defense. He lined up solely on the edge in a 2-point stance. In his 3 college seasons, he played in 20 games, starting 8 of them. He did not start playing football until his junior year of high school, so he is still a very raw prospect which shows on his film. He is an excellent athlete and with further coaching, he can grow into a very good edge rusher.
Pass Game
In the pass game, Ojabo is a very good speed rusher and uses his quick first step, speed, and length to get to the outside hip of the lineman and get to the quarterback. He showed good hand movement when speed rushing but when he is engaged with linemen he is easily blocked out of the play, and he often struggles to create separation. He was often used as a contain player which limited his usage but when he was solely focused on pass rushing, he showed flashes of dominance. While Ojabo has very good strength, he uses his athleticism to get to the quarterback rather than his strength. He has some experience in coverage, but he is far from ready to drop back in the NFL. If he continues developing his hand technique and power moves, he can be an excellent pass rusher at the next level.
Run Game
In the run game, Ojabo shows a lot of issues on film. He often struggles getting off blocks, allowing linemen to create big running lanes in his gap. At times he will make plays on the ball-carrier, but he is far too inconsistent to be trusted on early rushing downs. When the play is ran away from his side, he shows excellent speed and pursuit abilities to chase down the ball carrier and he is a good tackler.
Last Word
Ojabo projects best as an edge rusher in a 4-3 scheme. He has the athleticism to be used as an outside linebacker in a 3-4, but he needs to vastly improve his coverage skills. With his speed on the edge, he will excel on 3rd down passing situations and he has a lot of experience on special teams.
One-Liner: Ojabo has the speed rushing ability to be a dominant pass rusher, but he will need to develop his power moves and run support before he can be a reliable 3-down player.
