Joey Porter Jr. CB Penn State: Scouting Report

Height: 6’2

Weight: 198

Overall

Joey Porter Jr. is a long, outside corner in Penn State’s man heavy defense. In his 4 seasons with the Nittany Lions, he has played in 35 games, starting 31 of them. He is very athletic and his size and length will allow him to matchup against big outside receivers in the NFL.

Pass Game

Porter played a lot of press coverage on film. He is very patient with his footwork but at times he will play on his heels causing him to lose his balance and give up separation on in-breaking routes. He has the speed to make up ground if he is beaten down the field and he is remarkable arm length to break up passes at the catch point. He is too grabby down the field and at the top of routes which will result in penalties but he shows good physicality. He did not have a lot of production in college only getting one interception throughout his whole career but he has the ball skills to break up passes.

Run Game

In the run game, Porter is a very good tackler and his blend of size and strength will allow him to be an immediate impact player in run support. He shows very good burst to the football and he shows the ability to get off blocks on film.

Last Word

Porter played primarily on the boundary and played a lot of press coverage on film. He projects best as an outside corner in a man-heavy defense in the NFL. He has the size, length, and athleticism to be a dominant corner in the pros but he needs to improve his balance and fluidity. He also needs to be better at not grabbing receivers down the field when he loses a step. His size and speed will allow him to be used on special teams to begin his career as well.

One-Liner: Joey Porter Jr. has the intangibles of a number 1 cornerback at the next level but he needs to improve his technique and creating takeaways before he can reach that potential.
