Joe Tippmann C Wisconsin: Scouting Report

Height: 6’6

Weight: 313

Overall

Joe Tippmann is a big, strong center in Wisconsin’s pro-style offense. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 25 games, starting 22 of them, all at center. He is a good athlete for his size and with his experience as a longtime starter in college, he can make an immediate impact at the next level.

Pass Game

In pass protection, Tippmann is quick to get in his pass set and shows a very good anchor against bullrushes from interior defensive linemen. He has elite size and strength to matchup with all forms of interior pass-rushers and was dominant on film. He has very good vision in picking up stunts but he lacks some quickness in his feet to move laterally in picking up the extra defenders. He needs to improve his balance after initial contact. At times he will lose his footing against swipe moves pushing him to the side and resulting in him getting out of position.

Run Game

In the run game, Tippmann continues to show off his power by quickly getting hands on his man and getting them off their spot with a strong initial punch. After initial contact he needs to be more consistent in driving his legs to push back the defender but when he does he has the strength to overpower his man and drive them up the field. He does a very good job of flipping his hips after initial contact to create open gaps on inside runs. He needs to improve his balance after first contact as well. He goes to ground far too often on film and that will need to be cleaned up at the next level. He was often used as a pulling lineman and did a good job out in space, especially for his size.

Last Word

Tippmann has elite size and strength at the center position and projects best in a gap run scheme where he can open up lanes in the middle and continue to excel as a pass-protector. He has very good athleticism for his size but he needs to improve his balance to limit the plays he ends up on the ground. Although he only played center in college, he has the frame and skillset to slide over to guard if need be.

One-Liner: Joe Tippmann is a very large center who plays with a great anchor in pass protection and the strength to open up holes in the run game allowing him to be an immediate impact player in the NFL.
