Trey McBride TE Colorado St.: Scouting Report
Height: 6’3’’
Weight: 246
Overall
Trey McBride is a Y/H tight end in Colorado State’s run heavy offense where he lined up on the line of scrimmage, as a wing, and occasionally on the outside. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 40 games, starting 33 of them. He also played basketball in high school which shows on tape with his athleticism and ability to high point the ball down the field. He was the leader of Colorado State’s offense and was a weapon as both a receiver and a blocker.
Pass Game
In the pass game, McBride was primarily used as a receiver but when he blocked in pass protection he showed good footwork, balance, and strength to match up with both defensive linemen and linebackers. As a receiver, he has good footwork off the line and has the speed to create separation down the field. Although he is not a tremendous route runner, he has excellent hands and can make tough contested catches in tight coverage. With his size he has a huge catch radius and is able to adjust his body to back shoulder throws. After the catch, he has good straight-line speed but is not agile to dodge defenders, instead he uses his strength and power to break tackles and gain extra yards.
Run Game
McBride played in a run heavy offense while at Colorado State where he was constantly used as a blocker on the line of scrimmage. He is aggressive off the snap and has very good strength and temperament to drive his man out of the play and open up running lanes. He was even used as a lead blocker on outside runs and was very successful in blocking both defensive linemen and linebackers. His athleticism allows him to get up field and block at the 2nd level as well.
Last Word
McBride played as both a Y and H tight end in college and he has the ability to play as both at the next level as well. He projects best in a run heavy offense where he can block on the edge and be used as a primary target on play actions. With his strength and athleticism, he can be used on all 3 downs and can be a very reliable receiver on 3rd downs with his hands and catch radius. His athleticism and blocking ability allow him to be used on special teams as well.
One-Liner: Trey McBride can do it all as a tight end as both a blocker and receiver, and he will be a true 3 down threat at the next level.
