Perrion Winfrey DT Oklahoma: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4’’

Weight: 290

Overall

Perrion Winfrey is a dominant interior lineman for Oklahoma’s 4-3 defense. He is a JUCO product and enrolled at Oklahoma prior to the 2020 season. He lined up primarily at the 3-technique but can play nose tackle or 5-technique if needed. In his 2 seasons at Oklahoma, he played in 23 games, starting 20 of them. He was very productive this past season and was dominant on film.

Run Game

In the run game, Winfrey has a quick first step off the line and a very strong initial punch. At times, he creates immediate pressure in the backfield, and he has the power to blow up inside runs before they have a chance to develop. He has very active hands and is always working to get off blocks. He will often try to time up the snap giving him an even quicker jump off the line, but this resulted in multiple offside penalties on film. When he times the snap correctly though, he has the quickness and tackling ability to get to the ball-carrier and make big plays in the backfield. He is a very strong run stuffing defensive lineman, and he can eat up blocks to create space for his teammates as well.

Pass Game

Winfrey does a very good job of using his power, hands, and relentless motor to get to the quarterback. He has the power and initial punch to drives his man into the pocket on bull rushes and he has the hand technique to get around his man. When he is in contact with linemen, he never stops driving his feet and he is always looking for ways to collapse the pocket and make the play. He can truly do it all as an interior pass-rusher and he has the physical tools and elite first step to be a very productive 3-technique in the NFL.

Last Word

Winfrey projects best as a 3-technique in a 4-3 scheme. He has an elite blend of size, quickness, and power to be used on all 3 downs. However, he was often rotated in an out of drives on film which is likely how Oklahoma operates their defense, but it brings up some concerns of his durability. Besides that, though, Winfrey has the tools to excel on 3rd downs, on special teams, and can be an immediate starter at the next level.

One-Liner: Perrion Winfrey has elite quickness and with his power and hand technique, he will make big plays in the backfield against both the run and pass.
