Max Mitchell OT Louisiana: Scouting Report

Height: 6’6’’

Weight: 307

Overall

Max Mitchell is an athletic right tackle in Louisiana-Lafayette’s run heavy offense. He played primarily at right tackle but has experience on the left side as well. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 52 games, starting 38 of them. He has a long frame allowing him to add some weight in the NFL and improving his strength at the point of attack. He plays with good toughness and although he played in the Sun Belt Conference, he was very successful against top talent.

Pass Game

Mitchell is very quick in getting to his pass set and is athletic enough to recover when needed. He needs to improve his balance and ability to stay square in pass protection to stay on his feet against athletic edge rushers. At times, he will use poor hand placement causing him to miss his punches allowing the defender to get around him and get to the quarterback. While he has some struggles in pass protection, he can be a good starter to begin his career with the potential to grow into a dominant lineman with further development and physical growth.

Run Game

In the run game, Mitchell consistently makes holes and continues to show his excellent athleticism. He was very good on swing plays and can make blocks at the second level. He has the ability to flip his hips after making contact, creating big holes for the ball-carrier. He has the strength to push his man off their spot on zone blocks and shows the lateral movement necessary to block athletic defensive linemen. He has all the physical tools to excel in the run game and he can be an immediate contributor in the NFL.

Last Word

Mitchell has experience on both sides of the line, but he projects best as a right tackle to begin his career with the versatility to the left side or the interior if needed. He projects best in a zone run offense where he can use his athleticism to make blocks up the field. He was very good on tape and with his athleticism and large frame, he has the potential to develop into a very consistent starter in the pros.

One-Liner: Max Mitchell has the physical ingredients to grow into a dominant tackle in the NFL, but he needs to improve his strength and hand usage before he can reach that potential.
