Overall

Matt Corral is an athletic pocket passer Mississippi’s RPO heavy offense. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 37 games, starting 29 of them. In the bow game against Baylor, he suffered a sprained ankle on his right foot causing him to miss a majority of the game. He has good size and athleticism to make plays using his legs as well as shows very good toughness in leading his team.

Pass Game

Corral played primarily in shotgun while in college and relied on a lot of RPO/Play action plays which helped his rhythm. He has good footwork and does a good job of maneuvering around the pocket to find space. He is very good at scanning the field and reading the defense to find his open target. His throwing motion is not a prototypical release which causes him to have an elongated release and makes it difficult for him to put touch on his throws. His accuracy in inconsistent on film but he shows flashes of being able to fit the ball into extremely tight windows down the field. He puts excellent velocity on his throws especially on short and intermediate plays but was very inconsistent on his deep balls. Against the rush he has the athleticism to escape the pocket and extend plays, but his accuracy drops significantly when throwing on the run. He also shows poor ball security when facing pressure.

Run Game

In the run game, Corral was occasionally used on designed quarterback runs. His speed and elusiveness allow him to make plays with his legs, but he plays his best when he can sit in the pocket and take off if needed rather than being used on designed rushing plays. He is a good enough threat as a runner to cause concern for defenses, but I do not believe he will be a strong rushing threat at the next level.

Last Word

Corral projects best as a pocket passer in an RPO style offense allowing him to use his rhythm on play action and make quick throws over the middle of the field after play fakes. His accuracy and ability to throw on the run are his main concerns, but he shows flashes of excellent arm talent on him. He is a “win with quarterback” and he will need some time to develop his consistency before he can become a “win because of” quarterback.

One Liner: Corral has the size, arm strength, and athleticism that you want from a dynamic starting quarterback, but his inconsistent accuracy will hinder his ability to be a dominant passer in the NFL.
