Devonte Wyatt DT Georgia: Scouting Report
Height: 6’3’’
Weight: 304
Overall
Devonte Wyatt is an athletic defensive tackle in Georgia’s 4-3 defense. He lined up primarily in the 3 technique but also has experience as a 1 technique and 5 technique due to his versatility. He is a JUCO product beginning his career at Hutchinson C.C. then transferring to Georgia. In his 4 college seasons, he played in 49 games, starting 25 of them. He is an excellent athlete and was a key contributor to Georgia’s national championship run this past season.
Run Game
Wyatt excels against zone run schemes where he can use his athleticism to move laterally and get to ball carrier. He has a quick first step and has a good motor in pursuing to the play, but he needs to improve his strength at the point of attack. At times, he plays with a low pad level and gets a good push into the backfield but often times he will get overpowered against stronger offensive linemen and get washed out of the play. He struggles in gap run schemes where he was forced to fight through traffic to close the gap.
Pass Game
Wyatt plays his best football when rushing the passer. He is quick off the line and has the hand quickness and athleticism to get around his man and get to the quarterback. He has powerful hands and uses a very good rip/pull move to get past interior linemen. Although he shows a strong initial punch, he lacks the power to fight through full contact blocks. When offensive linemen get strong hand placement on him, he struggles to work through it. He needs to continue to improve his pad level, and foot drive to reach his potential as a dominant interior pass rusher.
Last Word
Devonte Wyatt projects best as a 3-technique defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme. He has excellent athleticism and has the upper body strength and pass rush technique to get to the quarterback and move laterally against the run. He will be very valuable on 3rd downs with his pass rushing technique and even though he has some struggles in gap scheme runs, he is a true 3 down player at the next level. He also has experience in special teams stemming from his time in JUCO.
One-Liner: Devonte Wyatt’s blend of power and athleticism makes him a dominant pass rusher, but he needs to continue to improve his pad level before he can reach his ceiling in the run game.
