Will Anderson Jr. EDGE Alabama: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4

Weight: 243

Overall

Will Anderson is a dominant defender in Alabama’s 4-3 defense. He has experience playing all over the defensive line including the 7-technique, 5-technique, 4-technique, and even inside in a 3 technique. In his 3 seasons with the Crimson Tide, he played in 39 games, starting all of them. He is a phenomenal athlete with elite explosiveness to wreak havoc on opposing offenses.

Pass Game

Anderson lines up in both a 4 point stance and as a stand up rusher. He has an elite first step off the edge and has the explosiveness to quickly get offensive tackles on their heels and pushed back into the pocket. His strong lower body allows him to generate force through his hips and drive his feet to bullrush opposing lineman. He also uses his hands to create separation and swipe away his man. He does lack some bend when rushing on the outside but he makes up for it with his elite motor and pursuit to the quarterback. When lined up inside in a 3-technique he continues to show off his initial punch to collapse the pocket and he can be used on stunts to maneuver around the line. He was occasionally used in coverage while in college and had success with his speed and athleticism in space.

Run Game

In the run game, Anderson does an excellent job at spilling pulling guards on power runs to blow up plays in the backfield. He also continues to use his high motor and speed to chase down the ball-carrier down the field. On film though, he missed a few too many tackles and he needs to improve his balance in space, especially on option plays to his side of the field. With his blend of size, strength, and athleticism, he will be able continue developing his tackling ability and grow as an all-around edge player.

Last Word

Anderson can play all over the defensive line but he projects best as a 7-technique edge rusher in a 4-3 scheme. He has the athleticism to be used in coverage in the pros but he plays his best when he can pin his ears back and get to the quarterback. While he has some room for improvement with his bend and tackling, he will be an immediate impact player to begin his career and he can transform a defense early in his career.

One-Liner: Will Anderson is a phenomenal athlete and his high motor and explosiveness, he will be a dominant player in the NFL.
