Tyree Wilson EDGE Texas Tech: Scouting Report

Height: 6’6

Weight: 275

Overall

Tyree Wilson is a very big edge defender in Texas Tech’s hybrid defense. He began his college career at Texas A&M where he appeared in 12 games in 2 seasons. He then transferred to Texas Tech where he played for 3 seasons, playing in 32 games and starting 28 of them. He suffered a season ending foot injury in the game against Kansas this past season so that will need to be monitored throughout the draft process. He has elite size and length but lacks the top end athleticism you want in a franchise edge rusher.

Pass Game

Wilson lacks explosiveness off the line of scrimmage and has a slow first step. He has very good strength at the point of attack but his lack of first step burst is concerning. When he bullrushes he shows the power to drive his man back into the pocket but he struggles in getting off the block to make the play on the quarterback. He is very raw in his pass rushing technique but he shows flashes of being able to use his hands and move inside the offensive tackle to get into open space. He lacks bend when rushing on the outside which makes it easy for quarterbacks to step up in the pocket to avoid him. When he has an open lane to the quarterback he does a very good job of using his length to quickly get to them and bring them down. He was occasionally used in coverage but struggled to keep up with receivers due to his lack of speed and acceleration.

Run Game

In the run game, Wilson does a good job of extending his arms after initial contact to push the linemen back and create separation to find the ball-carrier. At times, he will get washed out of plays as he struggles to get off blocks. Most of his tackles on film came from him being unblocked off the edge and him moving laterally down the line of scrimmage to make the play. He shows excellent effort in chasing down the ball-carrier down the field and he is a very good tackler.

Last Word

Wilson played primarily as a stand up edge rusher but he also has experience in a 4 point stance as a 5-technique or on the inside as a 3-technique. He projects best as an edge rusher in a 4-3 scheme. He lacks the coverage abilities to be used in a 3-4 but he could slide into the interior if needed. His lack of explosiveness is very concerning and he will need a lot of development before he can be a consistent impact player on all downs. His size and strength will allow him to be a very good special teams player early in his career though.

One-Liner: Tyree Wilson is a raw pass rusher with elite physical traits who will need a lot of development early in his career but with time, he could grow into a dominant force.
