Overall

Kayshon Boutte is a versatile receiver in LSU’s pass-heavy offense. In his 3 seasons with the Tigers he has played in 27 games, starting 21 of them. He suffered an ankle injury midway through the 2021 season resulting in 2 surgeries and it may have resulted in his huge drop in production this past season. He also has some off the field concerns regarding his attendance at team events outside of football. On the field he shows flashes of talent and he has the athleticism to make an impact in the pros.

Pass Game

Boutte shows good footwork off the line of scrimmage to get around press coverage but lacks urgency in his routes. He did not run many complicated routes on film and he often rounded out of his breaks and struggled creating separation down the field. At times he shows flashes of having some route savvy especially on short routes near the goal line but he needs to have that same intensity on every rep. He made some good catches on film but had far too many drops in his 2022 film and made a lot of body catches. He struggles making contested catches down the field and lacks the physicality to box out defensive backs and fight for the football at the catch point. After the catch, Boutte is a dynamic playmaker. He has good acceleration up the field and shows the vision to find open space and maneuver around defenders. 

Run Game

In the run game, Boutte was occasionally used on jet sweeps and screens to get the ball in his hands and  he had some success due to his playmaking abilities. As a run blocker, Boutte shows sufficient effort but he needs to continue growing his physicality before he can be relied on as a consistent blocker on run plays.

Last Word

Boutte looked like 2 different receivers from his 2021 film to his 2022 film. In 2021, he showed polish and a better sense of urgency on every rep compared to this past season where he showed a lack of focus and made too many mental mistakes. He projects best as an outside receiver but can make an impact in the slot with his athleticism. If he can get the right coaching and continue developing in all phases of his game, he can grow into a very good number 2 receiver in the NFL but for now he projects best as a true number 3 who can carve out a role on special teams.

One-Liner: Kayshon Boutte has the athleticism and playmaking ability to be a solid starting receiver in the NFL but with his dropped passes and lack of focus on film, he has a lot of improvement needed before he can be relied on.
