Darnell Washington TE Georgia: Scouting Report

Height: 6’7

Weight: 264

Overall

Darnell Washington is a big-framed tight end in Georgia’s pro-style offense. In his 3 seasons with the Bulldogs, he played in 36 games, starting 27 of them. He is a phenomenal athlete for his size and although he did not have a ton of receiving production in college, he has the length and hands to be a dominant receiving threat at the next level.

Pass Game

Washington was used often both as a blocker and receiver while at Georgia. As a blocker he shows a strong anchor to protect against blitzers off the edge or even defensive ends. His elite size and strength allows him to match up against many different pass rushers and he can be a reliable pass protector early in his career. As a receiver, he does not have great speed in his routes but he has very good hands and can box out defenders with his size and can make tough contested catches down the field. After the catch, he has the strength and athleticism to break tackles and gain valuable extra yards after contact. He can be an immediate redzone threat to begin his career and with further development, he can grow into a dominant all-around receiving threat down the field.

Run Game

In the run game, Washington was used often as a lead blocker while in college and had a lot of success. He has a lot of upper body strength and has a strong initial punch to drive defenders off the ball and consistently open up run lanes. With his size, he can be used as an extra tackle in the run game and open up any run scheme at the next level. When blocking in space he can have some struggles settling his feet to make key blocks but that can easily be fixed moving forward.

Last Word

Washington is a phenomenal blocker in both the pass and run game and with further development in his route running, he can be an all-around dominant tight end in the NFL. He is an excellent athlete and his size and hands make him an immediate redzone threat. He also has plenty of experience blocking on special teams and can be an immediate starter there as well.

One-Liner: Darnell Washington is a one of a kind athlete and with his excellent blocking skills combined with his large catch radius, he has the potential to grow into a dominant 3-down tight end in the pros.
