Omarion Hampton RB North Carolina: Scouting Report

Height: 6’0

Weight: 220

Overall

Omarion Hampton is a dynamic running back in North Carolina’s gap heavy run scheme. In his 3 seasons with the Tar Heels he played in 38 games while starting 28 of them. He had excellent production these past two seasons and with his natural running ability he is poised to make an immediate impact in the NFL.

Run Game

In the run game, Hampton has very good vision and patience to follow his blocks and find the open running lane. While playing in a gap heavy scheme, he did a good job of following the pulling lineman and using his quick feet to get to the open gap in a hurry. He has good contact balance to break tackles and he always drives his feet after contact allowing him to gain critical yardage at the end of plays. In the open field, he has the acceleration to get to the edge and outrun defenders and has the top end speed to break off big runs. Once he is in the second level of the defense, he is elusive in getting around defenders and he is a natural playmaker allowing him to consistently find the endzone.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Hampton was used heavily both as a receiver and blocker. As a receiver, he has good hands and has the quickness to make defenders miss after the catch. He will be a very good outlet option at the next level and with his athleticism, he can develop into a more dynamic receiving back if needed. As a blocker, he is very physical and he has the balance to hold his ground against blitzing linebackers. At times he will put his head down during his blocks resulting in him losing his leverage but that can be fixed moving forward.

Last Word

Hampton has the talent and versatility to play on all 3 downs. He projects best in a gap-heavy run scheme where he can utilize his vision and burst to create big chunk plays all over the field. He will be an immediate impact player in the NFL and in the right system he can grow into a very consistent back.

One-Liner: Hampton is a do it all running back and with his playmaking ability along with his willingness to block in pass protection, he can be an every down back in the NFL.
