Cam Ward QB Miami: Scouting Report

Height: 6’2

Weight: 223

Overall

Cam Ward is a poised athletic quarterback in Miami’s pass heavy offense. Ward began his career at Incarnate Word (FCS) where over two seasons he played in 19 games, starting all of them. He then transferred to Washington State where played in 26 games over two seasons, again starting every game. Prior to this past season he transferred to Miami where he continued to have elite production, starting every game and leading the Hurricanes to a 10-2 record. He has ample starting experience during his college career and with his calm pocket presence, athleticism, and elite arm talent, he can make an immediate impact at the next level.

Pass Game

Ward has excellent poise and awareness in the pocket. He always plays calm and does a good job of going through his progressions and throwing to the outlet receiver if nothing is open down the field. His footwork can be inconsistent at times causing some inaccurate throws but that is something that can be developed in the pros. When under pressure he has the speed to escape the pocket as well as the strength to break tackles to extend plays. When he is on the run he continues to keep his eyes down field and he is very good at making plays out of structure. At times, he will try to force a big play when he is on the move resulting in bad turnovers but his big plays far outweigh his mistakes. He has a very quick release and elite velocity to fit the ball into very tight windows down the field. He can complete passes from all different arm angles allowing him to get the ball around incoming defenders on screens and short passes. He has good touch on his deep balls especially down the sideline. He has the strength to throw deep down the field but he thrives on intermediate throws in the middle of the field.

Run Game

Ward has very good athleticism to be a threat as a runner but he does not rely on his legs to make big plays. When the pocket collapses he can escape to the outside with his speed or he can use his vision and patience to find open lanes in the middle of the field and take off in a hurry. He is quick and is fast enough to outrun the front seven defenders and he is very smart in getting to the sideline or sliding to avoid unnecessary hits. On key plays though he is not afraid to use his size to initiate contact and drive his legs to push the pile and gain critical yardage.

Last Word

Cam Ward is a “win because of” quarterback with his ability to make plays both in the pocket and with his legs. He has an abundance of starting experience throughout his college career and he has had elite production everywhere he has been. He has the skillset to play in any system but he projects in a pass-heavy offense where he can be the focal point of the team. He is a pro-ready player and he has everything you want in a franchise quarterback and he has tools to keep developing as a player.

One-Liner: Cam Ward’s blend of poise, arm talent, athleticism, and experience will allow him to make an immediate impact in the NFL and in the right system he will be a very good franchise quarterback.
