Overall

Keon Coleman is a big-time playmaker in Florida State’s pass heavy offense. He began his college career at Michigan State where he played in 22 games, starting 12 of them over 2 seasons. During his freshman season for the Spartans he played for their basketball team as well. He then transferred to Florida State prior to this past season where played in all 12 games and started all of them. He has elite speed and has the physical tools to be a very good playmaker at the next level.

Pass Game

Coleman has very good speed off the line of scrimmage with his long strides but he is very raw in his route running. He lacks nuance in his routes and struggles to create separation on quick routes where he cannot use his long speed to outrun defenders. On long developing routes though he shows off his elite speed to blow by defenders and he is good at finding the open space when the quarterback is forced to scramble making him a reliable target on off-script plays. He has good hands and shows the ability to high point the ball and make spectacular catches down the field but he uses his body often on short routes which results in some drops on film. He shows flashes of physicality at the catch point but with his raw technique he may struggle to come down with 50/50 balls early in his career. After the catch Coleman excels with the ball in his hands. He has good vision in finding open lanes and has elite acceleration to get up the field in a hurry. He also has the athleticism to dodge defenders and make guys miss in space.

Run Game

Coleman was occasionally used on designed runs and with his ability to make plays in space, he should be used in the run game in the NFL as well. As a run blocker, he shows sufficient effort but needs to improve his block temperament before he can be relied on to open up running lanes on the edge.

Last Word

Coleman has experience playing on both the outside and in the slot but he projects best as a “Z” receiver where he can be moved all over the field to create mismatches and keep the defense on their toes. With his playmaking talent, he can be a reliable 3rd down receiver but he needs to be more consistent with his hands to be used on quick route concepts and short down and distances. On special teams, he was used as a punt returner and made big plays as a returner this past season. While he has more long speed than quickness, he can be an option as a returner to begin his career.

One-Liner: Keon Coleman has the physical traits and playmaking ability to be a dominant receiver in the NFL but he needs to continue to develop as a route-runner before he can reach his full potential.
