Kamren Kinchens SAF Miami: Scouting Report

Height: 5’11

Weight: 205

Overall

Kamren Kinchens is a versatile safety in Miami’s 4-3, zone-heavy defense. In his 3 seasons with the Hurricanes he played in 34 games with 26 starts. He suffered a scary upper body injury this past season against Texas A&M but he made a full recovery and did not show any lingering issues afterwards He had excellent production during his college career and consistently made plays all over the field on film.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Kinchens played primarily as the single-high safety in zone coverage but has experience in the box and in the slot in man coverage. He has the speed to cover from the numbers to the numbers and showed good technique in staying square and breaking on the football. At times, he showed poor vision in jumping on underneath routes or reading too heavily in the quarterback’s eyes, leaving his zone uncovered. When his vision is correct though he has elite burst in breaking on the ball and making plays on underneath routes. He made a lot of big tackles when coming downhill from deep in coverage but he occasionally took poor angles allowing the ball-carrier to get outside of him and he lacks the elite recovery speed to chase them down. In man coverage, he has very good footwork and athleticism to stick with his man down the field and he has the physicality to match-up well against tight ends and running backs. He was unable to make tough hands catches away from his body on film but when the ball is in his area he shows the ball skills to break up passes and make body catches on picks. He was occasionally used on blitzes both from the middle and off the edge and he has the burst to get to the quarterback in a hurry.

Run Game

Against the run, Kinchens is an excellent tackler and he has the speed to make plays all over the field. When he gets his eyes on the ball-carrier he fires out of his stance and is explosive in getting to the football. He has very good technique when tackling as he consistently wraps up and drives his legs after initial contact. His physicality and elite pursuit will make him an immediate impact player against the run at the next level.

Last Word

Kinchens has the versatility to play all over the field but projects best as a deep safety who can come downhill to make tackles against the run and match-up downfield in coverage. His ability to play man coverage from the slot will make him very valuable on 3rd downs and his physicality will allow him to excel on special teams.

One-Liner: Kamren Kinchens is an elite playmaker and while he makes some mistakes with his eyes, he has the physicality and explosiveness to be a tone-setter on defense both against the run and pass.
