Tyler Guyton OT Oklahoma: Scouting Report
Height: 6’7
Weight: 328
Overall
Tyler Guyton is a massive right tackle in Oklahoma’s RPO heavy offense. He began his career at TCU where he played in 9 games with just 1 start over 2 seasons. He then transferred to Oklahoma where these past 2 seasons he played in 20 games, starting 15. Even with his limited experience he is a polished pass-blocker who has the physical traits to be a day 1 starter at the next level.
Pass Game
In pass protection, Guyton is quick out of his stance and he has elite footwork getting into his pass set. He plays with a wide stance and has excellent balance to easily shift his weight to protect against stunts and outside speed rushes. He has a strong initial punch and once he gets his hands on defenders’ chests he gives up little ground and takes them completely out of the play. He has an elite anchor and he has an excellent base to defend against bullrushes. At times he will play too top heavy causing him to get off balance but he has the arm length and power to recover when defenders gain the edge on him.
Run Game
In the run game, Guyton has very good power but he lacks the elite aggression and block temperament you want from an offensive tackle. On zone runs he often uses his size to wall off defenders rather than driving his feet after initial contact. When he does drive his feet he has the strength to move defenders off the line and he creates running lanes but he needs to be more consistent. On power runs he shows the athleticism to be used as a pulling tackle and get to the second level even with his size. Once he is at the second level he struggles slowing down to get square with defenders making it difficult for him to block more athletic linebackers in space. Although he lacks the elite aggression, he has the size and strength to open up running lanes on zone runs along with the athleticism to block out in space.
Last Word
Guyton played primarily at right tackle in college but playing with a left-handed quarterback he was forced to defend the blind side which he did so very efficiently. He projects best at either right or left tackle in a pass heavy offense where he can use his elite talent as a pass-protector to defend against premiere edge rushers. His dominance in pass protection will allow him to excel on 3rd downs and he has the size to make an immediate impact on special teams.
One-Liner: Although Tyler Guyton lacks starting experience and run blocking aggression, he is an elite pass-protector who has the size and technique to be a day one starter
