Joe Alt OT Notre Dame: Scouting Report

Height: 6’7

Weight: 322

Overall

Joe Alt is a dominant left tackle in Notre Dame’s balanced offense. In his 3 seasons with the Fighting Irish, he played in 38 games, starting 33 of them. He has elite size and strength and was a key factor in both the pass and run game for Notre Dame on film.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Alt played primarily in a 3 point stance which will likely need to change at the next level due to the speed of NFL edge rushers. Even with his 3 point stance though, he is quick in getting to his pass sets and he has excellent footwork. He does a very good job of staying balanced and keeps his shoulders square to wall off pass rushers. He has excellent upper body strength along with a very good anchor to protect against bullrushes. His massive size and length allows him to keep space within him and the defender allowing him to have control over every pass rep. He has very good vision and does a good job of picking up stunts. He showed some struggles on stunts with powerful defensive tackles getting to him on the edge but he was still able to hold his own and extend plays for his quarterback often. He was dominant on film against some high quality pass rushers and with his elite size and technique he can match up well with NFL caliber defensive ends.

Run Game

In the run game, Alt is a dominating force on both zone and gap runs. In zone he has a strong initial punch and does an excellent job of driving his legs after initial contact to consistently open up lanes for the ball-carrier. Even with his size he is a very good athlete allowing him to get to the 2nd level and make key blocks against linebackers and defensive backs. On gap runs he does a very good job of flipping his hips to wall off interior defensive lineman as the pulling guards behind him get to the edge. He was occasionally used as a puller as well and showed good athleticism but he plays his best when he can fire off the ball rather than moving him across the line.

Last Word

Alt is dominant on film both in pass protection and in the run game. He was constantly used as the lead blocker on runs and he made some huge running lanes for the back. He has the athleticism to play both left and right tackle but projects best as a left tackle in a zone run scheme. He has elite physical traits and he can be an immediate contributor in the NFL and has the potential to become a premiere player throughout his career.

One-Liner: Joe Alt is a consistent tackle and with his size, strength, and technique he will be a franchise tackle in the NFL.
