Quinyon Mitchell CB Toledo: Scouting Report

Height: 6’0

Weight: 196

Overall

Quinyon Mitchell is a long corner in Toledo’s 4-3, zone-heavy defense. He played primarily on the boundary but has experience playing in the slot as well. In his 4 collegiate seasons he played in 46 games, starting 40 of them. He had excellent production during his last two seasons especially in pass breakups and he has the physical tools to continue his success at the next level.

Pass Game

In the pass game, Mitchell played primarily in off-coverage on film but he showed the footwork to mirror his man off the line of scrimmage. His lack of press on film is a concern going into the pros but he has length to match up well with bigger receivers at the line of scrimmage. He has excellent quickness out of his breaks and he excels against short routes. In zone coverage he does a good job of reading the play and he has good speed to cover his area of the field. In man coverage he has good fluidity and hand usage to stick to his man down the field. While he has good speed, he lacks the elite recovery speed to regain control once he gives up ground down the field. When he is playing tight coverage he shows elite ball skills. He has incredibly long arms and does an excellent job of playing through the receiver’s hands to break up passes. He also has great hands in making big time interceptions especially on short routes. He has a thin frame but he is not afraid to be physical when the ball is thrown his way and he makes it very difficult for receiver’s to come down with the catch on jump balls.

Run Game

Against the run, Mitchell is very passive and shows poor effort in getting to the ball-carrier. He struggles getting off blocks and lacks the aggressiveness needed to make plays on outside runs. When tackling, he is inconsistent in wrapping up and rarely drives his feet after initial contact. Against receivers on the outside, he shows some ability to bring them down but against running backs he is a liability and needs to be more physical if he wants to be relied upon in the NFL.

Last Word

Mitchell has experience in the outside and in the slot but with his extremely long arms and elite ball skills he projects best as boundary corner in the pros. His coverage skills on short yardage plays and physicality at the catch point will make him very valuable on 3rd downs. His length can be used on special teams especially as an edge rusher in field goal block units.

One-Liner: Quinyon Mitchell has the length and ball skills to excel in coverage but his lack of aggression against the run and experience in press may cause some growing pains early in his NFL career.
