Troy Fautanu OG Washington: Scouting Report

Height: 6’4

Weight: 317

Overall

Troy Fautanu is an undersized but athletic left tackle in Washington’s pro-style offense. In his 5 seasons with the Huskies he played in 41 games with 31 starts. He played primarily at left tackle during his college career but has experience playing guard as well. He played a substantial role in Washington’s offensive success this past season, leading to a National Championship appearance.

Pass Game

In pass protection, Fautanu has excellent footwork and the foot speed to get into his pass set and move laterally with ease. He has very good hand usage and shows the hand technique to redirect the defenders initial punch and get them off-balanced, occasionally getting them to the ground. If a defender gets their hands on his chest, he lacks the anchor to defend against bullrushes and gives up too much ground against bigger, more powerful edge rushers. He is slightly undersized at the tackle position and has below average arm length that will make it difficult for him to consistently protect against NFL level pass rushers, which will likely result in him moving to guard, but with his lateral mobility and technique he has the versatility to slide back out to tackle in emergency situations.

Run Game

In the run game, Fautanu continues to show off his elite athleticism as he excelled as a pulling tackle on film. He is quick out of his stance and gets to the outside and up the field quickly. At times he will overrun defenders at the second level causing him to miss blocks but he shows the ability to get down the field, set his feet and create big holes for the ball-carrier. On down blocks, he has a strong initial punch but needs to be more consistent in driving his feet after initial contact. When he does drive his feet, he has the power to move linemen and open up big holes, especially on the interior.

Last Word

Fautanu projects best as a guard in a power-run scheme where he can use his athleticism as a pulling lineman to get to the second level and make blocks down the field. His versatility will allow him to be a true 6th man on the offensive line as he can play both guard spots or slide out to tackle if needed. He was dominant on short yardage plays especially on the goalline which will make him very valuable on short 3rd down plays. His athleticism will make him an immediate contributor on special teams as well.

One-Liner: Troy Fautanu is an athletic lineman who projects best at guard but has the versatility to play anywhere on the offensive line if needed.
